George Alvarez, who has an extensive criminal record, was identified as the author of the run over of migrants. According to the first versions, he ran a red light and lost control of his car.

George Alvarez, of Mexican origin according to local media, was identified on Monday by the police in Brownsville, Texas, as the author of the attack on Venezuelan migrants, who was accused of involuntary manslaughter.

According to the first investigations, the subject jumped a red light and apparently lost control of his vehicle, which overturned and hit 18 people.

The police reported that six of the migrants who were hit by a Land Rover while waiting for a bus in front of the Obispo Enrique San Pedro Ozanam shelter for homeless people, died at the scene of the incident, while two of the injured who were in critical condition they died in hospital the following day.

Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda said authorities are investigating and have not ruled out the possibility that the crash was intentional.

Authorities are awaiting the results of a formal toxicology report to see if Alvarez was intoxicated at the time of the accident.

Alvarez tried to flee, but the people “held” him until authorities arrived, Sauceda said. He has not cooperated with officials, Sauceda added, and he is being held on $3.6 million bail.

Police also released Alvarez's criminal history, which includes charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, assault on an elderly or disabled person, assault on a public official, theft of a vehicle, assault causing bodily injury, criminal conduct, driving while intoxicated, evading arrest, interference with public functions, obstruction or retaliation, possession of marijuana, resisting arrest, arrest or transportation, and theft of property.
