The Preakness Stakes had a Puerto Rican flavor thanks to the victory of jockey John Velazquez over his compatriot Irad Ortiz and that left Mage ridden by Venezuelan Javier Castellano without a triple crown chance

Puerto Rican jockey John Velázquez won the 148th edition of the Preakness Stakes riding the exemplary National Treasure in a novel finish, a victory also for the renowned trainer Bob Baffert who reappeared after a suspension and who with this victory adds the historic figure of eight trophies in the aforementioned competition.

Previously, trainer Bob Baffert had to see how one of his horses was sacrificed on the track due to a blow received.

For his part, Mage, ridden by Venezuelan Javier Castellano, barely managed to settling for third place at Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland, making him less likely to become a triple crowned champion.

It should be noted that the Puerto Rican jockey aboard National Treasure won dramatically by winning the last leg of the race head-to-head with Blazing Sevens, ridden by fellow Puerto Rican Irad Ortiz, Jr.

John Velázquez is a Hall of Fame jockey and he got the prize he needed, it's his first Preakness Stakes after winning four Kentucky Derbys and two wins in the Belmont Stakes. “The success I had in other races, and not having won this one, I definitely lacked, it's very special to have it,“ said the Puerto Rican jockey after the race.
