More than 230 pounds of illegal fireworks were seized Friday night by Long Beach authorities ahead of Independence Day celebrations.

The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) reported that officers from the North Division seized the explosives during a raid, and later posted a photograph of the seized merchandise on social media.

Within hours of the 4th of July festivities, Long Beach authorities reiterated that fireworks are illegal in the city.

If a person is arrested or cited in connection with violations of possession or use of illegal fireworks, you can face a $1,000 fine, as well as jail time.

Organizing any event at the A city where illegal fireworks are set off will also be penalized, authorities said.

Since mid-May, the City of Long Beach has urged the public to enjoy the Fourth of July festivities safely for residents and visitors alike, reiterating that all personal fireworks, including those deemed “sane and safe,” are illegal.

Authorities asked people to report the use and sale of illegal fireworks in the city through the Go Long Beach app or on the Go Long Beach website at this link.

Reports can also be made to the non-emergency number in the Communications Center at 562-435-6711.

Residents should not call 911 to report the sale or use of fireworks illegal, unless the explosives caused an injury or fire.
