A new tragedy involving drug overdose was written at a school in the United States, after two teenagers were found dead at a high school in Fayette County, Tennessee.

Most dramatic in the story, another student is in the hospital in critical condition after a possible drug overdose shortly before a high school graduation ceremony.

While there are no forensic conclusions about the cause of death, police said they are being investigated as possible drug overdoses.

Police said the incident occurred at Fayette-Ware High School and that the students were off the premises.

One of the victims was identified as 16-year-old Alyssa Thorne by her father, Mark Thorne, who said heartbroken by this tragedy, β€œShe had so many hopes and dreams, man, that's just a dream now.”

β€œShe would tell me that the boys brought cocaine to school and I would tell her not to mess with it. I don't want to have to bury you, those were my exact words to her and she is dead today,” she said.

The names of another minor who died and a third student who was hospitalized in critical condition have not been released by authorities.

Until the end of 2022, the United States had 101,000 overdose deaths, of which a figure that has worsened during the first months of 2023, mainly due to the fentanyl crisis.

From 2019 to 2021, fentanyl overdose deaths in the United States increased 94%, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is estimated that almost 200 Americans die every day from using this drug.
