President Biden, accompanied by members of his family, visited on Sunday the graves of his first wife and young daughter who died in a car accident 50 years ago.

President Joe Biden visited the graves of his first wife and daughter on Sunday, the 50th anniversary of the car accident that took their lives. The couple and other members of the Biden family also attended Mass at Saint Joseph at Brandywine Roman Catholic Church, where the grave is located.

After the service, Biden and first lady Jill Biden brought flowers to the grave of the president's late wife Neilia, 30, and their 13-month-old daughter Naomi. The two died in a car accident on their way to pick up a Christmas tree shortly after Biden was elected to the Senate in 1972

The 80-year-old president was the senator-elect from Delaware on Dec. 18, 1972, when 30-year-old Neilia drove Naomi and her two sons, Beau and Hunter, to buy a Christmas tree, but He was struck by a tractor-trailer.

Beau, who died of brain cancer in May 2015, broke his leg and Hunter, then 3, suffered a fractured skull.

Biden was sworn in before the Senate at the hospital where Beau and Hunter were being treated.

At the anniversary event, other family members who attended the Sunday service included Biden's granddaughter, Maisy Biden, who was seen wearing a flower crown. Hunter Biden was also in attendance on Sunday.

Joe Biden married first lady Jill Biden in 1977. They have a daughter, Ashley, who also attended the ceremony.
