The day Pelosi warned that Biden lacked the authority to pay student debt

After the president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced that student debt would continue to be suspended for at least another four months to give working and middle-class families a break, social networks recalled the day that Nancy Pelosi warned that Biden lacks authority to pay off student debt.

It was just last year, 2021, when House Speaker Pelosi pointed out that Biden did not have the authority to pay off some Americans' student loan debt .

“People think that the president of the United States has the power to forgive the debt, he doesn't,” were Pelosi's words. “ He can postpone, he can delay, but they don't have that power.That has to be an act of Congress.”

Furthermore, he seemed to question whether such a policy was fair: “Suppose his son just told him that, at the time, he didn't want to go to college, but he's paying taxes to forgive someone else's obligations. That may not make him happy .”

So far, Nancy Pelosi has not commented on the statements she made a year ago, above all, it is unknown if she still thinks the same.

The White House announced that the Biden administration will cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for Pell Grant recipients, up to $10,000 for individual borrowers earning less than $125,000 per year, and announced that student debt will remain suspended.

Through Twitter, the president indicated that with this decision he is fulfilling his campaign promise to announce a plan to give working and middle-class families a break while they prepare to resume payments on federal student loans in January 2023.
