2022 was a tough year for passengers, and for the airlines that racked up the most complaints in years, from flight cancellations to lost luggage, they were the most frequent consumer complaints.

Canceled flights and lost luggage were a huge part of the 78,000 complaints airlines received in the United States in 2022 from affected and angry passengers.

This was shown by an analysis carried out by the PIRG, based on an analysis of the complaints that travelers made about problems with airlines in the Department of Labor, travel agencies and reservation sites such as Expedia and Priceline.

2022 was a particularly difficult year for airlines and their customers, since after two years of operations affected by the pandemic, millions of people returned to airports to fly.

The holiday season at the end of the year was particularly difficult, when thousands of flights were grounded by bad weather in practically the entire country.

But not only that, but a Southwest Airlines system glitch led to a wave of flight cancellations, refund claims and lost baggage, sparking a barrage of complaints.

The level of complaints in 2022 exceeded by five times the complaints that the airlines added in 2019, when 15,000 travelers expressed their discomfort.

“But the end-of-year winter storm disaster that derailed the vacation plans of millions of families added more fuel to efforts by regulators and lawmakers to improve consumer protection on everything from scheduling to junk fares. and family seating,” Teresa Murray, a PIRG consumer supervisor, noted in the report.

Which were the airlines with the most complaints?

The PIRG report detailed that Frontier was the airline with the highest number of complaints, with 20 per 100,000 passengers.

In second place was Spirit Airlines with 10 complaints per 100,000 passengers and in third place with 9 complaints per 100,000 passengers, mainly for flight cancellations.

Southwest Airlines is also among those that received the most complaints in 2022; as well as American Airlines, United, Delta and Allegiant.

According to the Department of Labor, during the past year airlines canceled 190,000 flights in the United States and had 1.4 million flights.
