Douglas Young was facing trial for murder, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon for the death on March 29, 2021 of Francisco Villalba, who distributed food for various applications

The Manhattan Prosecutor's Office, in New York, reported that Douglas Young, found guilty last March for the murder of a Mexican food delivery man, Francisco Villalba, to steal his electric bicycle, was sentenced to serve 41 years in prison, with the possibility of to make it a life sentence.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said 40-year-old Douglas Young fatally shot the delivery man inside Poor Richard's Playground in East Harlem on the night of March 29, 2021.

According to the investigation, Villalva had just finished making a delivery when Young approached him and tried to steal his bike and the delivery man refused to deliver it, so the man shot and killed him, then fled. Young was later identified through surveillance video, according to Bragg.

Last month, a jury found Young guilty of second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

“Francisco Villalva worked hard to support his family in Mexico and dreamed of buying a house. That dream was cut short when he was viciously shot and killed while he was doing his job,” Bragg said.

“While this sentence provides a strong measure of accountability, we will never be able to undo this devastating tragedy, and I know his memory will live on with his friends, family and community.”

According to the union, several food delivery workers have been attacked or have lost their lives in New York in recent years after falling victim to attackers who wanted to steal their bikes and money.

Villalba, who was 39 years old, worked for a decade in restaurants to help support his father in Mexico, but in the pandemic he lost his job, so he had joined the group of food delivery men who work for applications and among others. which are abundant with Latino workers.
