The northern border of Mexico is one of the most violent regions of the country, as there are frequent clashes between members of organized crime and authorities, which generates panic among the population.
The situation has escalated to such a degree that it even has repercussions on the other side of the border, as happened recently in South Texas, where the Hidalgo school district suspended activities in all local schools this Friday, after that shots were heard on the Mexican side.
Regarding this incident, Lieutenant Chris Olivarez reported that agents from the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the incident, but no evidence of bullet impacts was found on school grounds .
“We don't know what kind of weapons they are, or if it is a confrontation between cartels, or the cartel with the military,” added the official.
According to the head of Hidalgo Police, Romeo Rodríguez, the staff was already present in the schools when the shots were heard and, as a precaution, it was decided to close the schools. He added that he alerted the Border Patrol and the state Department of Public Safety of the situation.
According to the EFE news agency, at that time thousands of migrants continued to congregate on the southern bank of the Rio Grande, near the Pharr International Bridge that connects Hidalgo with the Mexican city of Reynosa, some 395 kilometers south of San Antonio.
On May 10, a shooting was reported on the Mexican side of the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge. Several videos posted on social media by drivers hoping to cross into the United States showed the shooting.
