Undoubtedly, Russia scored a victory in the film space race by shooting the first film in space, which is already a reality and recently presented its trailer.
Russia officially presented the trailer for the first film shot in space. The film titled “The Challenge” is a Russian space fiction film co-written and directed by Klim Shipenko and partially shot aboard the International Space Station .
The film follows the story of a thoracic surgeon named Zhenya (played by Yulia Peresild), who flies in zero gravity to perform a complicated heart operation on a cosmonaut (played by real-life cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy), who is not in conditions to return to Earth to be treated.
In addition to having to undertake this unprecedented journey, Zhenya has to face discrimination from male astronauts for the fact that she is a woman.
Hilming in space
“El Desafío” was partially shot on board the International Space Station, some 250 kilometers above the earth's surface, was directed by filmmaker Klim Shipenko and produced by the Yellow, Black and White studio, as well as by the television network. state television Channel One Russia, with the help of the Russian space agency Roscosmos.
According to Konstantin Ernst, CEO of Channel One, the filmmakers' motivation is to confirm Russia's leadership in the space sector and restore the prestige of the cosmonaut profession in the eyes of new generations.
Actress Peresild had to prove her suitability for the role, which involved enduring the unusually harsh conditions of space, through medical, psychological and physical tests.
Cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov was chosen as the ship's commander, while Klim Shipenko and Peresild flew as participants in the space flight.
Principal photography began on October 5, 2021, when Shkaplerov, Peresild, and Shipenko flew to the ISS aboard the Soyuz-2.1a launch vehicle.
During his time on the ISS, Klim Shipenko shot some 30 hours of footage, as well as serving as director, art director, make-up artist and production designer.
