After his 12-round unanimous decision victory against John Ryder in Guadalajara, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez set his sights on a rematch against Dmitry Bivol , whom he lost to a year ago. The horizons that the Mexican glimpses were described as dangerous by the legend Oscar de la Hoya.
In dialogue with Zona Deportiva US, De la Hoya explained that Alvarez is getting into not very safe terrain and an impossible mission by wanting to fight in the 175-pound category, a weight that the Russian has already stated he has no intention of repeating. “You can call me crazy, but 'Canelo' is never going to beat Bivol at 175, that's for sure.”
The boxer from Guadalajara has the possibility of facing Bivol in the 168-pound category, but for his former promoter he is still an eleven-yard shirt. “At 168 pounds it can be even more dangerous for 'Canelo', because Bivol is going to be lighter on his feet, and he will be faster,” he analyzed.
The Mexican legend believes that Saul's staff should plan very well the next fight for 'Guero'. “Canelo is in a difficult situation, because the next fight he takes has to be very, very strategic.”
Oscar de la Hoya was the manager of “Canelo's” career until 2020, when for various reasons they parted ways and the native of Guadalajara chose to work with Eddie Hearn , whom he took advantage of to subtly launch a comment with an ironic tone. “Let his brilliant promoter do what he's doing. I have my plan in my head, but I keep that to myself, and you will have to discover it,” he sentenced.
Although De la Hoya has always had words of praise for Alvarez, like the ones he emanated when he spoke exclusively with Ricardo Lopez Juarez for La OpiniOn , he has also been one of his most prominent critics. “I think that Canelo is a clean fighter, a fighter of honor. I think he wants to do great things, he wants to make history,” he commented in mid-April on LO.
After the victory against Ryder, the 'Golden Boy' was insidious about Saul's level in the fight and the impossibility of knocking him out despite making him fall. “He took Ryder down, but when you have a fighter hurt, you go and finish him off. That's what you're supposed to do. And I think that's what the 50,000 fans who attended the fight in Guadalajara wanted to see. It's no secret that Canelo is at the end of his career. If someone tells me otherwise, then I am going blind,” he said.
