More than 150,000 North Carolina residents affected by TurboTax will receive their compensation check

After US business software company Intuit was sued by its users who claimed they were tricked into paying for free tax services by TurboTax, a US tax preparation software package.
This week, Josh Stein, the North Carolina attorney general, reported that he reached an agreement with the company for $4.5 million dollars, which will be distributed to the more than 150,000 affected residents in the state.
According to the statement, residents eligible for compensation will be contacted by the settlement fund administrator, Rust Consulting, who will contact residents via email and send payment checks via email.
In this regard, Attorney General Josh Stein stated: β I am pleased that more than 150,000 North Carolinians will recover the money they were tricked into paying when they filed their tax returns. My office will hold companies accountable when they mislead people to make money,β he said.
The company in total will pay some $141 million in the multi-state settlement, which will be distributed to 4.4 million people across the country. According to the announcement, the amount of money that each affected person will receive will be based on the number of fiscal years for which they qualify. In this sense, it is expected that most taxpayers receive between $29 and $85 dollars.
βEligible taxpayers include those who paid to file their federal tax returns through TurboTax for tax years 2016, 2017, and 2018, but were eligible to file them for free through the IRS Free File Program,β the statement said.
