Authorities discover a drug tunnel near the border wall that connects Tijuana with the US

Despite the fact that the drug cartels continue to generate new methods to cross their shipments into the United States, one of the methods that has lasted for decades is the use of drug tunnels built in the border area with Mexico.

The city of Tijuana is one of the areas where dozens of constructions of this type have been found, and recently one more was found in an abandoned property a few meters from the border wall, and barely two kilometers from the border port of San Ysidro.

An anonymous complaint was what made it possible to locate the tunnel, 30 meters deep and about 20 meters long that crosses the border wall that divides both countries, according to a statement issued by the Tijuana Secretariat for Citizen Security and Protection.

According to Attorney General Iván Carpio Sánchez, when the agents arrived at the home next to the border wall, they did not find anyone and only found a package containing a synthetic drug known as “cristal.”

Neighbors of the house located in the area where the tunnel was located told the media that they did not notice strange movement around the house and that during the nights they only heard the noise of vehicles at high speed .

One of the residents interviewed by the Efe agency, assured that he had lived in that area for 12 years and said that it is a quiet place and that regularly at night they only hear cars passing at high speed, but none of the residents of the place are I peeked out to see what was happening.

Because the interviewee only comes home to sleep, he said he did not know if the tunnel was used to cross drugs or migrants to the United States .

Another of the residents who was consulted by the media indicated that in the time she has lived in that place she had not noticed strange movements, in addition to not noticing that there was movement of migrants trying to cross into the United States.

The address where the passage was located is guarded by agents of the Army, the National Guard and the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) waiting for the United States authorities to find the exit point in that country.

One year ago, in May 2022, a one-story house located in a popular neighborhood in the industrial zone of the city of Tijuana, on the border with the United States, was the screen for a Mexican criminal cell to build a tunnel inside. for the transfer of drugs to San Diego, California.

The simple house, guarded only by a guard dog, was located just 800 meters from the Otay border port and 300 meters from the dividing wall between the two countries.

In Tijuana, these types of tunnels date from the 1990s , when the first passageways began to be discovered and have been used mainly for the transfer of drugs and some to cross people illegally.

Reports from the Mexican authorities indicate that from 2006 to date, 15 tunnels have been found on the California-Mexico border, mainly in the Otay industrial zone, where the authorities have said that the type of terrain facilitates their construction.
