Increase in the minimum wage in the US: 25 states prepare increases for 2023, some of more than USD15 dollars per hour

This 2023, workers in at least 25 states in the United States will start the year with more money in their pockets, since as of January 1, increases in the minimum wage they earn will come into effect.

Although the hikes vary by state, there are at least four where the hourly minimum wage will be paid at least $15, and one more where workers will earn just over $16 per hour.

This year, Americans have faced high prices for goods and services due to record inflation that has caused workers to lose purchasing power.

Although inflation has begun to show signs of cooling, after 7.7% in its annual measurement for October, and while waiting for the data for November; family budgets have suffered from the high costs of basic products such as food and gasoline.

To alleviate inflation and in the midst of a scenario of fear for a possible recession, increases to the minimum wage arrive in at least 25 states of the country.

The four states where the minimum wage will be at least $15 are: California, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Washington; while in Washington DC, voters decided that the minimum wage would be $16.10 per hour .

New York will be brought forward to the new year and the new minimum wage of $14.20 will take effect from next December 31st.

For his part, President Joe Biden has also called for the federal minimum wage to be raised to $15 an hour.

14. Missouri – increase to $12
15. Montana – increase to $9.95
16. Nebraska – increase to $10.50
17. Nevada – variable increases between $9.50 and $10.50
18. New Jersey – increase to $14.13
19. New Mexico – increase to $12
20. New York – increase to $14.20
21. Ohio – increase to $10.10
22. Rhode Island – increase to $13
23. South Dakota – increase to $10.80
24. Virginia – increase to $11
25. Washington – increase to $15.74

While workers in these states will start the year with better earnings, workers in Georgia and Wyoming will continue to earn the lowest wages in the country.
