Mayor Eric Adams said that a total of 70,000 asylum seekers traveled to New York City - many of them sent by buses from red southern states - and that more than 42,000 of them are still 'in the care' of the city.

New York Mayor Eric Adams described the number of immigrants the United States is receiving as “a real crisis.” In addition, he said that the Big Apple receives a large part of these people who cross the southern border of the country, but that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is not giving enough funds to the city.

“FEMA allocated 350 million dollars (about 323 million euros) and only 30 million dollars went to New York City,” he stressed in an interview on “The Sunday show with Jonathan Capehart” on MSNBC.

“So we get the large sum of immigrants into our city, but we're not getting the funds to match. The plan in our border states is simply to use FEMA money to move immigrants to New York City. That is not a viable solution,” she stressed.

The Democratic mayor said that a total of 70,000 asylum seekers traveled to the city - many of them sent by buses from red southern states - and that more than 42,000 of them are still “in the care” of the city.

“We have used more than 150 hotels, including nine Centers for Help and Response to Humanitarian Emergencies. This is a real crisis,” added the mayor, who indicated that, in addition, 20 independent gyms that are not attached to schools are going to be used as “rest centers.”

Adams stressed that despite the fact that New York is one of the most affected cities, it is not the only city that is suffering from this crisis and that he has joined with three other mayors, although he did not indicate which cities, to send a letter to the president , Democrat Joe Biden, alerting him to the situation.

“No city should have to shoulder a national problem on their own (…) it is time we sit down and talk to the president so we can show firsthand how the impact of this crisis is undermining the way we do business. our function in our cities”, he stressed.

However, Adams stressed that this is not an attack on Biden and that he will do “everything possible to get him re-elected” in the next 2024 presidential election.

Adams recently reported that the iconic 100-year-old Roosevelt Hotel, named for former President Theodore Roosevelt and closed three years ago, will reopen to accommodate immigrant families with children.

Likewise, this luxury hotel on 45th Street in Manhattan, a few steps from Fifth Avenue and the famous Grand Central Station, will establish the ninth Emergency Response and Humanitarian Aid Center and will also offer various services, including assistance medical.

The mayor explained in a statement that the Roosevelt Hotel, which opened in 1924 and closed during the 2020 pandemic, will function as a centralized intake center for all asylum seekers and also provide them with a range of legal, medical and reconnection services with families or friends, as well as placing them in a shelter.
