Officers went to the home of a 71-year-old woman to check on her health. , but they found decomposing remains in the basement. Her daughter and her granddaughter are believed to be responsible for her death.

Police said Saturday that a woman and her teenage daughter have been charged with the murder of a 71-year-old grandmother in Maryland.

The woman, identified as Candace Craig, 44, was charged with first- and second-degree murder, while her 19-year-old daughter, named Salia Hardy, was charged with being an accessory after the fact, according to a press release posted by Prince George's County Police Department.

Police say the victim is Margaret Craig, mother of Candace Craig and grandmother of Hardy.

Officers went to the victim's home, located in the 200 block of Hill Road, Friday afternoon for a wellness check on the 71-year-old woman after a family member said there was no heard from her in several days.

Craig opened the door and allowed officers into the house to search for his mother. A smell of decay in the basement prompted an investigation by the evidence and homicide units, according to the police department.

Both Craig and Hardy are in the custody of the Department of Corrections.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will confirm the identity of the victim and investigate the cause of death.

The Prince George's County Police Department is asking anyone with information relevant to the investigation that is presented to the officials to collaborate with the clarification of the case.
